How to Drink Cascara

There are really two ways to consume Cascara, besides eating the fresh fruit off the tree. Firstly, you can brew it like a tea by steeping in hot water. Secondly, you can make a simple syrup that can be used in a number of different cocktails and specialty drinks.

Basic Brewing Instructions : : . .

HOT BREW:

  1. Heat water to a temperature of 200ºF.
  2. Add 40g of cherries for each liter of water.
  3. Steep for 4 minutes
  4. Strain and enjoy.

Works well in a french press!

COLD BREW:

  1. In an infuser or french press, mix 50-60 grams of cherries in a liter of tap or filtered water.
  2. Place in fridge and let stand for 8-9 hours.
  3. Strain and enjoy.

I use the Willow & Everett infuser shown below for all my cold brew coffee and cascara at home.

Simple Syrup Instructions : : . .

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup White Sugar
  • 1 cup Filtered Water
  • 1/2 cup or 20 g Cascara / Dried Coffee Cherries

METHOD:

  1. Put all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove saucepan from heat and allow syrup to cool a little bit.
  3. Filter syrup through a strainer to remove coffee cherries.
  4. Store in a jar or other appropriate container and keep refrigerated.
  5. Mix into your favorite cocktail at your leisure .
  6. Enjoy!
